A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a spyglass taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the act involved more than a defensive killing.

Like many elements of the final season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident originates in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

The play reveals the 1943 event, which transported a vessel into a dimension known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. The man in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the briefcase would assuredly have samples of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that Henry ended up in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the influence of a dark entity, much like how the character Will was influenced by the entity in the past.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear associated with the mine highlights how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to gain strength.

His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the ultimate battle that awaits.
