It: Welcome to Derry Premieres Second Early on HBO Max

Excitement is building for the Stephen King adaptation It: Welcome to Derry, which is receiving positive feedback and incorporating themes from other Stephen King works. Following the premiere, the broadcaster announced that the second installment will debut sooner than expected, timed perfectly for October 31st.

Schedule Change Information

Kicking off on Halloween night at 3 a.m. EST, the next part of the Derry prequel will make its debut on HBO Max, prior to its traditional TV airing. Subsequent episodes of the series run will premiere on Sunday nights on both HBO and its streaming arm, leading up to the season finale on December 14th.

Series Overview

Taking place within the Derry mythology, Welcome to Derry borrows elements from the classic book while enlarging the universe realized by the It movie director in the two It films. The first It movie focused on young characters confronting unimaginable horrors, so it’s fitting that this show upholds that legacy. Yet, the first installment of the streaming show demonstrates it set out to increase the tension, providing even more intense scares than Muschietti’s films and establishing a brutal tone for the upcoming episodes.

Story World and Concepts

Located in the early '60s, the program introduces a new generation of grown-ups and kids inhabiting a outwardly charming locale masking a dark secret. The town follows a brutal, periodic loop—defined by hostility, discrimination, and otherworldly forces, as a monstrous presence reappears once every three decades. Although Welcome to Derry might sound like it leans too heavily to the films at first, what differentiates the digital program is its parallel storytelling—told from the viewpoints of young and old concurrently. The kids remain highly exposed to the entity's fear, but older characters don't escape dealing with their individual fears stemming from Derry’s deep-seated bigotry and lurking supernatural forces.

Episode 2 premieres on October 31 at 3 a.m. EST.
